As a part of your relapse prevention plan, cultivate your awareness of these common backward steps toward addictive behavior.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TRIGGERS<\/strong> &#8211; External, interpersonal, and intrapersonal.<br \/>\nWhich areas are the riskiest for you?<br \/>\nWhich do you have the most difficulty combating?<br \/>\nRate each category from 0-10 (where 10 is the riskiest or most difficult).<\/p>\n<p>a.____ Conditioned responses in certain settings<br \/>\nb.____ Unpleasant emotions<br \/>\nc.____ Unpleasant physical sensations<br \/>\nd.____ Pleasant emotions<br \/>\ne.____ Pressure from others<br \/>\nf. ____ Conflict with others<br \/>\ng.____ Socializing<br \/>\nh.____ Testing personal control<\/p>\n<p><strong>IMAGINING\/FANTASIZING<\/strong> &#8211; Start to imagine what it would be like to&#8230; how you would feel, how you would think and act &#8230; then&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nUNHELPFUL THINKING<\/strong> &#8211; Irrational beliefs, cognitive distortions, and rationalizations that you used to convince yourself to take the backward step.<\/p>\n<p>a.___ Negative exaggeration; awfulizing; catastrophizing.<br \/>\nb.___ Self-downing \/ self denigration.<br \/>\nc.___ Rationalizations:<br \/>\n&#8220;It won&#8217;t really matter.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I deserve it.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I will only have one.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s been a long time.&#8221;<br \/>\nd.___ Low frustration tolerance (LFT):<br \/>\n&#8220;I can&#8217;t stand it.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s awful.&#8221;<br \/>\ne.___ The Tyranny of the Shoulds:<br \/>\n&#8220;It shouldn&#8217;t be so hard.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I shouldn&#8217;t have this problem.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;S\/he shouldn&#8217;t speak to me that way.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;The world stinks, and it shouldn&#8217;t!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLANNING<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; &#8220;I&#8217;ll just go down to the store and buy a bottle.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8211; &#8220;I&#8217;ll finish this project and then go to the bar.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8211; &#8220;I&#8217;ll take some money out of my other account.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8211; \u00a0Others:_____________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>ACTING<\/strong> &#8211; Behaviors that lead to UNDESIRABLE OUTCOMES (list them)<\/p>\n<p>Teach yourself how to respond at each step. Even though it gets harder to intervene at each step along the way, it can be done.
